Online Conference 2020

How can I get access to the online conference of the European Forum Alpbach 2020?

In order to participate in the online conference with top-class speakers, you have to purchase a ticket. In the course of the ticket purchase and registration process you will receive an access link to the online conference.

How international and diverse is the online conference?

The speakers at the European Forum Alpbach 2020 come from over 50 nations. The proportion of women this year is over 40%. As we continue to receive confirmations from international speakers, these numbers may increase.

What does the conference tool of the EFA online conference look like and what can I expect?

We use the conference tool "Hopin", which has many functions that also allow interaction between participants, or participants and speakers. Here you will find a video tutorial to help you find your way around the conference tool: Link

Is the online conference barrier-free?

Unfortunately, due to financial and personnel resources, we are unable to offer subtitles for the sessions of this year's online conference for hearing impaired people. However, we are doing our best to subtitle our content on our social media channels to make it accessible to everyone. We will also use these channels to report on key topics and events during this year's Forum.

The networking part of EFA is very important to me as a partner and my target audience. How can networking at the digital Forum Alpbach work?

The conference tool we have chosen for our online conference offers various possibilities for interaction with specific groups of participants or between participants. There is, for example, a separate networking area, so-called lounges, which offer various possibilities for video presentation and the possibility of direct video calls. How will young people be included in this year's programme? How can I get in touch with them?

Alumni Clubs around the world will contribute to the Forum this year via digitally accessible events organized by them. We deeply regret that we had to cancel the scholarship programme for 2020. Since we cannot imagine a Forum without the voices of the youth, we have decided to take the opportunity to give it a bigger stage. More information about the above events will be available at the programme presentation on July 7, 2020.

What is a hub and how can I find out about hub events in my area?

What we label hubs are members of the Forum Alpbach Network (FAN), i.e. alumni organisations all over the world on the one hand, as well as selected partners who contribute events to our online conference from various places on the other hand. You can participate in these events online as soon as you have purchased a ticket. The events are streamed as part of the EFA program. For the regulations that apply to participating in these events locally, wherever they take place, please contact your local Alumni Club or Alpbach Ambassador. Participation in the events taking place at the Alpbach Hub, i.e. in the Congress Centrum Alpbach, unfortunately is not possible this year. This year, only people who contribute to the EFA can attend on site in Alpbach.

In which languages will the discussions of the online conference take place? Which events will have translations? Which language translations will be made?

The European Forum Alpbach 2020 will mostly take place in English. Only a few events within the scope of our online conference will be held in German. These will be marked as German language events. This year, translations will not be available.

The time indications are adjusted to which time zone?

All program dates are adjusted to the Central European Time (CEST).

Forum 2020 and Corona

Will the European Forum Alpbach take place this year?

The European Forum Alpbach took place for the first time only months after the end of World War II under even more challenging circumstances. Therefore, if possible, the EFA will not be defeated by the Corona crisis. Especially in times of great uncertainty there is an increased need for discussion about how to restart our lives after the pandemic. The Forum would like to meet this need again this year.

However, the Forum 2020 is breaking new ground. Therefore, on-site in Alpbach, there will merely be a greatly reduced number of persons present, consisting exclusively of people who are contributing to activities of the Forum or are media representatives and have been expressly invited. The EFA will certainly comply with all official regulations. The main focus for us is our online conference, which will be even more international this year. Discussions will be streamed via our conference tool from hubs around the world as EFA events.

Why is the EFA2020 not postponed until autumn?

One possible option was to postpone the EFA for individual days, if, for example, the number of legally possible participants would be fundamentally larger in September than in August. However, a greater postponement to later autumn or winter is not considered at the moment, simply because of the complexity of planning such an event.

How will you take care of security and health at the European Forum Alpbach 2020?

The security and health of all contributors at the Forum Alpbach have absolute priority. We are aware of the decisions of the Austrian Government regarding big events in the summer of 2020 and will strictly comply with these regulations. On site, the event will take place with necessary security measures with a greatly reduced number of attendees. Otherwise, the Forum will take place as an online conference. Our focus will be to ensure distance and hygienic regulations and to not take any unnecessary risks. The Forum Alpbach is in constant exchange with the community of Alpbach and the local health institutions.

Will the Forum survive the Corona time financially?

Similar to many others it is a financially and otherwise very challenging time. We do everything in our power to lead the Forum through these complicated times and to make responsible budgetary decisions. We acknowledge and appreciate those who remain connected to the Forum and offer their financial support. The Forum Alpbach is not any event, it is a mutual commitment to a better world and a better life for all. We feel assured that most of our partners share this vision, even in times of Corona.

Which representatives of the government will attend Alpbach 2020?

Representatives of the governing parties are invited to the Forum just like in any other year. We kindly ask for your understanding that the federal government is faced with extraordinary challenges - not only in terms of planning schedules - in these difficult times. Find the programme here.

How many people will attend the European Forum Alpbach 2020?

The European Forum Alpbach is breaking new ground in 2020. Therefore, we have a greatly reduced number of attendees on site in Alpbach, which exclusively entails people who contribute to the Forum or are media representatives. This year, the main focus lies on the online conference. For the online conference, we aim to reach a number of several thousand participations all around the world.

Does the Forum 2020 have events that are free of charge?

Unfortunately, due to the current situation, which challenges the Forum Alpbach financially, it is not possible for us to offer events with free admission this year. This is also connected to the fact that regular participation in the Forum is only possibly within the framework of our online conference this year.

Is there a possibility that I can attend the conference as one of the few people on site in Alpbach?

Unfortunately, it is not possible to acquire a participation on site in Alpbach. This year, due to the security measures, only contributors to the Forum that are specifically invited, such as speakers, moderators, selected media representatives and sponsors, will be in Alpbach.

I am the organizer of a social event which occurs each year in Alpbach. What will happen with my event?

Due to the Corona situation, social events of any kind (reception, happy hour, party, soccer match) will not take place this year. If you have ideas for an alternative of your event which is compatible with the Corona regulations, please get in touch with us.

I have heard about invitations to social events that take place during the Forum in Alpbach or I have been invited myself. What is this all about?

The European Forum Alpbach is not organising any social events this year and is not involved in the organisation of external social events. This has been clearly communicated from the beginning, but we have no influence on self-organised events in Alpbach. If people travel to Alpbach on the basis of external invitations, we unfortunately cannot accredit them for the Forum. In the interest of your safety this year only those persons who are decidedly involved in the Forum, and therefore have to be present, are allowed to attend. We look forward to welcoming you again personally as soon as the situation has been defused.

Will it be possible to hold breakout/partner sessions this year? If yes, what will that look like?

The health of our participants, staff and voluntary staff has the utmost priority. Breakout sessions on a small scale, which are either streamed as part of the online conference held by the EFA in 2020 or recorded for later purposes in Alpbach are possible. I am specifically invited to the Forum, because I am a speaker, moderator or media representative etc. and would like to take my children along. Will there be child care possibilities?

Unfortunately, in 2020 we cannot provide child care or a children’s programme in Alpbach. Children can come to Alpbach on the responsibility of their parents.

We gladly take your preferences into consideration and will try our best to fulfil your wish. We place great value in our loyal partners of the Tyrolian hotels, and want to see them going through this crisis the best way possible, in order to ensure to be able to serve you the following years. Out of solidarity to the small businesses in Alpbach, which heavily rely on congress tourism, the Forum has made advance reservations at almost all hotels and guesthouses in Alpbach this year so that no one goes away empty-handed. We ask for your understanding and can promise you in any case that you will get a room in Alpbach within walking distance of the Congress Centrum.

What is the European Forum Alpbach and what is its purpose?

The European Forum Alpbach is an interdisciplinary platform for science, politics, business and culture. Since 1945, we have dedicated ourselves to addressing the relevant socio-political issues of our time within the framework of the annual Forum in Alpbach and other events throughout the year.

We bring together international decision-makers from various backgrounds, an interested audience, and dedicated young people. We create a platform for a dialogue which is intergenerational, ideological and moves across borders.

We are committed to a sustainable, democratic society and to stimulate impulses for the further development of European integration with our events.

Who is the target audience of the European Forum Alpbach? Who is participating as a speaker and on which topics? / The Forum is an inflated elite event that is only for the rich and party officials.

Every year the Forum Alpbach brings together a broad mixture of attendees. Politicians, entrepreneurs, scientists and opinion leaders of all kinds get in touch with scholarship holders from around 100 different countries. The Forum is constantly striving for increasing internationalisation and diversification of its participants. The European Forum Alpbach is intended to be a place for all of those who, once a year, want to take a healthy dose of hope for the fight for a more peaceful and sustainable world.

The “Village of Thinkers” is the meeting place for those who enjoy contemplating, founding and planning how we can achieve a better life for everyone. Those do all of this together, every year, surrounded by the impressive Tyrolean mountain landscape – making the Forum much more than a conference. In Alpbach, acquaintances and friendships are made, sometimes for life. For the Forum Alpbach there is nothing more valuable than to make a small contribution to the development of great ideas and endeavors.

Who stands behind the European Forum Alpbach and makes the decisions?

The European Forum Alpbach is a non-profit association based in Vienna, Austria. Our association is made up of numerous personalities who, with the exception of the organising team, work for the Forum Alpbach on a voluntary basis. They are involved in various committees and are committed to ensuring that our activities and events are of high quality, of relevance, and programmed in line with our mission statement.

The EFA is managed by the Executive Board. The Scientific Advisory Board and the Advisory Committees are responsible for programming our events. The organising team ensures that all events and the scholarship programme are well coordinated. The Council and the General Assembly determine guidelines for the activities of the association and the programme design. The Steering Committee monitors the running activities, especially the preparation of the summer event in Alpbach. The voice of the numerous independent Alpbach alumni associations is represented via an elected coordination team in all committees of the European Forum Alpbach.

How is the Forum Alpbach financed and where can I find information on financial transparency?

We are financed by participation fees, contributions by sponsors and, to a smaller extent, by public funds. Our non-profit private foundation is responsible for the scholarship programme which – with the help of private supporters – enables young people from all over the world to participate in the European Forum Alpbach each year.

What does the Forum Alpbach do against sexual harassment during the Forum?

Professional and appropriate behaviour is expected of staff, members and participants of the Forum at all times and places during the Forum events. The EFA has drawn up a Code of Conduct in this respect, which applies to all Forum members and participants. Furthermore, there is a separate ombudsperson whose purpose is to mediate in the event of violations.

What is the Forum doing for climate protection and the environment?

Green Meeting Alpbach is a project of the European Forum Alpbach and the Congress Centrum Alpbach. The aim is to make our event more sustainable and ecologically responsible. In July 2010, the European Forum Alpbach and the Congress Centrum Alpbach were the first events to be awarded the Austrian eco-label for Green Meetings.

Does the event offer barrier-free access?

The honest answer is: The Forum Alpbach takes place in a mountain village with steep roads and will never be completely accessible for people with impaired mobility. The EFA is constantly striving to make improvements in terms of accessibility and to meet the needs of people with any disabilities as best as possible so that everyone can enjoy the Forum and take part in all events. For example, there is a pick-up service from the accommodation for physically handicapped persons. We are always open to suggestions in this regard.

What is the general theme of the European Forum Alpbach 2021?

Has it already been decided who will be the next president of the European Forum Alpbach?

The current situation asks for especially thoughtful and sustainable decisions in many areas. A personality which represents the Forum Alpbach can only be someone who is dedicated to a unified and democratic Europe, a well working international cooperation and a sustainable economy and society. In May 2020 Andreas Treichl was suggested by the General Assembly of the EFA as a candidate for the succession of Franz Fischler. At the same time, Andreas Treichl was elected Vice-president of the EFA. At the General Assembly in May 2021, Andreas Treichl will stand for election to become President of the EFA.

Who is Andreas Treichl and why was he chosen?

Andreas Treichl is an Austrian manager who led the Erste Group for over two decades. Treichl is a visionary thinker and acts in a European spirit. He has been a member and supporter of the EFA for years and knows Alpbach as a participant and speaker. His decision to stand for election as a President of the Forum Alpbach also shows the importance of our platform for scientific discourse and international exchange.
